Nazi druids are the best tree huggers. Say what you like about Adolf Hitler but he wouldn’t have built an autobahn through the Tara-Skryne valley. The Nazis were keen environmentalists, fervent believers in the mystical powers of nature. Some of the party’s kingpins were occultists who worshipped the Earth as a mother goddess, and never met a tree they didn’t want to hug. Had Hitler achieved his ambition, and established a Third Reich that extended from the Urals to the Atlantic, it is unthinkable that, today, his puppet administration in a German-run Ireland would permit the routing of the M3 motorway so close to one of the most sacred pagan sites in Europe. Speculation about how a Nazi junta might have handled the M3 controversy may seem idle. It isn’t. Just ask Michael J McGrath, self-styled Arch Druid of Tara and a prominent player in the campaign against the contentious motorway. Few if any of these people realise that the Arch Druid harbours a dark secret; before he became a wizard, he was a Nazi. In the mid-1980s, McGrath was a big noise in Ireland’s National Socialist Party (NSP), a neo-Nazi organisation with links to similar groups worldwide. A candidate in several local elections, he boasted about his hatred of Jews, immigrants and homosexuals. “Hitler is the future,” was among the slogans on which his party campaigned. A native of Kilkenny, McGrath’s political manifesto advocated the “supremacy of the white Celtic race”. He promoted the repatriation of “all non-white doctors” and claimed that Kilkenny was under threat from “satanic perversions” — by which he meant the town’s then tiny gay community. Though he also sought election on a pro-life and family values ticket during the 1980s, anti-Semitism appeared to be his greatest passion. He was exercised by what he saw as a Jewish plot to take over Irish politics. “They are infiltrating all the parties,” he told New Hibernia magazine in 1986. “Ben Briscoe (a former Fianna Fail TD) led the revolt against Haughey and had he been successful Fianna Fail would have fallen into the hands of the Jews.” Despite his zeal, McGrath was an unsuccessful demagogue. When he stood for Kilkenny Corporation in 1985, he polled 42 votes and demanded a recount. “I have quite a lot of relations and felt I should have got more votes,” he said. These days, however, McGrath poses as a peace-loving conservationist. Where once he wrote letters to newspapers downplaying the Holocaust, he now pens lyrical missives to editors about the spiritually-healing grandeur of Tara, pledging to oppose anyone who tampers with his Celtic heritage. Ireland’s druids needed Garda protection during their winter solstice celebrations after a series of death threats against their leader from a rival. Archdruid Con Connor led a small band of followers outside Newgrange to mark one of the highpoints in the Druid calendar flanked by a Garda squad car. Rival druid leader Michael McGrath, who calls himself the archdruid of Tara has told his supporters to shoot rival Con Connor “on sight”. Druid Connor took the threats so seriously he called for Garda protection for the ceremony on Friday to mark the shortest day. A Garda spokesman said: “we were there to make sure nobody disturbed the ceremony”, Dark Moon Grove Archdruid Connor said: “I have exposed him as a fascist and now he is threatening to have me killed. This madman should be in care but instead he is running around issuing death threats. Mr McGrath needs to enter into medical healing and by that I mean heavy sedatives. He is not a real druid. He has just made up some organisation and he only has a couple of followers”. Right-wing McGrath who once described Hitler as a “genius”, admitted using websites to call for Connors execution. Last week McGrath used the white supremacist website Stormfront to call on his followers to murder Connor and one of his druids. He said, “between these couple of commie queers, I could commit murder. These are the only two scum that I am interested in. Everybody but everybody knows I hate queers. Shoot him on site if you see him”. The self-styled archdruid of Tara was previously convicted for putting up hate-filled notices about a Garda officer in Kilkenny. McGrath stood for election in 1985 calling for “all non-white doctors” to be kicked out of Kilkenny. He also called for all gay men to be automatically jailed for ten years to stop the spread of AIDS. McGrath also tried to organise a new racist party on a fascist website after the murder of Kilkenny postman Alan Cunniffe. Last night Mr Connor said, “I have never met Michael McGrath face to face . I have never even spoken to him over the phone. I have no intention or wish to meet the man. Pagans are people who connect with the earth and the goddess. But McGrath claims he is a Catholic druid, which is a bit like saying you are a pagan Jew. It doesn’t make sense. McGrath is a fascist who was humiliated when he stood for election so he decided to present himself as a druid”. Last night Mr McGrath claimed he “regretted” some of the language he had used on the internet. He said “Connor is a vicious little English pagan and I do wish he was dead. But some of the language I used about gay people was excessive. It was just done in the heat of the moment”. McGrath denied he had ever stood for election for the National Socialist Irish Workers Party. He claimed: “there was another Michael McGrath who operated out of this same address in Kilkenny. But he was a totally different person. I heard he died over ten years ago in England. I have said I admired the German economic miracles of the years 1933 to 1938. National Socialist economies were the best, with full employment and the German worker earning the best wages and conditions. I still hold to the belief that Hitler was a genius up until 1938 when he went insane and in his totalitarian madness launched the Holocaust”.

Michael McGrath, the self styled 'Archdruid', who stood for election in the 1980's as a neo Nazi candidate, and who occaisionally denies he is the "same Michael McGrath" is still active on neo Nazi forums. He writes on 'Stormfront', a site that hosts a copy of Adolph Hitlers book Mein Kampf and extolls him as a man who "refused to surrender". Well signposted for attention google attention yahoo attention is Stormfront calls itself a "Racialist discussion board for pro-White activists and anyone else interested in White survival". On this first page the other Irish neo Nazis are discussing Michael McGrath the 'Archdruid' and then McGrath himself joins in with a paranoid tirade against Con Connor whom he imagines is behind exposing his Nazi past. On the second page he is holding court and extoling Nazi beliefs while at the same time being annoyed someone should mention his Nazi past!

We first heard about 'Arch Druid' (Michael McGrath) about two years ago. We were warned about this time about him by a Guard (policeman) who told us about the right wing connection. He had appeared on RTE TV claiming to be head of an exteme racist right-wing Party, and the fact that he kept appearing in court for Drunk and Disorderly behaviour and assault - SEE NEWSPAPER CUTTING from the Leinster/Munster Express 1996. He wrote to us, direct, inviting us up to Tara for Summer Solstice 1995. We decided that we needed to meet him personally before judging him. When we got there we were met by him; he was dressed in paramilitary dress and told us how he was shocked about the 'black Druids' who were coming from England. He also said that he wanted Janet to do the ritual and that he had called the press who were sending a photographer, even though we had said quite explicitly stated that we were coming as 'observers'. We exited very quickly giving no reason for our leaving. Last year a fundamentalist [Christian?] in Cork trying to sell anti-Pagan Halloween videos appeared in the tabloids claiming that there was going to be a human sacrifice at Halloween by Satanists and that the Gards were 'investigating'. We were contacted by the Garda inspector in Cork who wanted information, as this was news to him! We sent him a video on the 'Child Abuse and Sacrifice Myth' and generally put his mind at rest that it was just a fundamentalist trying to sell videos. Unfortunately, the next week, Michael McGrath appeared in the same paper saying how he was going to turn the full resources of his Order (the Irish order of Druids) against these nasty 'Satanic witch covens'. He therefore supported the fundamentalist in his claim by doing this, and we weren't very happy about his use of the word witch. He got a gathering of Druids together at Tara last Solstice, this included the British Council of Druid Orders, who sent a representative. One of the groups we were involved with under the PINE banner sent an observer, as we didn't want to actively support him. He has only been claiming to be a Druid for the past four years, so in no way has he the experience (about 21 years!) to claim the right to be 'Arch-Druid', which he has started doing recently, and more worryingly is being recognised as such by the Press. We had generally ignored his activities up until then, but one thing I can say is that his actions have united alot of Pagan groups here who are all agreed that his claims are going to far and who worry that his right wing activities would taint them, particularly the Druidic Groups here. At Lammas he decided to Crown a High King at Tara. At this point we decided to draw the line. We felt that this would be an insult to the Republic and those that fought for Ireland's independence over two hundred years. So we went up to Tara. When we got there we got several surprises. First of all, we weren't alone in our opposition - there were members of the Druid Clan of Danu (FOI), Ancient Order of Hibernians (Republican equivalent to the Orange Orders), Society of Irish Re-enactors ('the Clans') and several others. Secondly, he had been banned from the Book and Coffee shop there because he was so drunk, by the owner! There were only about seven of his group (including his two cousins) there, and by this time McGrath was so drunk he was unable to communicate coherently! The members of his 'order' had decided to call it off anyway because of his alcoholic state. We made our statement in a peaceful manner anyway (as did the others there) stating that we felt his actions were an insult to the memory of those that had died for the Republic, particularly as the site chosen for the crowning was were O'Connell read out the 1916 declaration of independence. We also stated that we did not recognise his title of 'Arch-Druid of All Ireland and Tara'; but I think he was to drunk to notice, to be honest! We got the first letter from him three days later. He threatened us with a list of organisations, including OBOD, ADF, CAW and Green Egg etc. etc. He made it clear that he thought that this was a plot by Janet and organised completely by us - it was nice to get the credit but it just wan't true! The second letter we received was very abusive and was from 'The Knights of Tara', an organisation linked to Michael McGraths Irish Order of Druids. We are unable to comment on this letter for legal reasons. The following Sunday we opened up the national tabloid to find he had written to them claiming that he had been 'put upon' by naked witches on Tara - SEE NEWSPAPER CUTTING! He also said that we were banned from his organisation!!! The article was generally tongue in cheek about him - referring to him as 'Monarchist' and us as 'Republican' - not a bad thing in this country!. It also states that there were '150' members of his organisation when there was in fact only seven (including the two candidates for 'High King' and his two cousins)! They did not refer to us by name (we successfully sued a paper here and that has left them edgy about us). We are pretty sure he just sent them a letter. Unfortunately, we ourselves were contacted by the same paper for a reply so had no choice but to say something. They have chosen to ignore (so far) the information we have passed on to them on Mr McGrath, and concentrate their article on 'Witch V's Druids', which is patently untrue as we are acting with the support of the sensible Druid community here. As Mr McGrath made the decision to go the Tabloid Press our reply is to go to the Pagan Press and keep this out of public view. His need to court the media is like to cause problems for all the genuine Witches, Pagans and Druids in Ireland. He has made his views quite clear in the article (and in the letters to us) on how he feels about the Wiccan community. We know of no genuine Druids anywhere who hold such a view, infact most of the ones we know work actively alongside the Wiccan community for the benefit of the whole of the Pagan community. Mr. Norris: I move amendment No. 4:In page 3, subsection (3), line 36, after “origins” to add “or their status as members of the travelling community or sexual orientation”.I am glad that the Minister is in a mood to take on board the very serious reservations that some of us have about this Bill although, of course, the intention behind it is an honourable and welcome one. I regret that I did not have the opportunity to expatiate a little more on that but I will limit myself, of course, within the scope of this evening's debate.I am concerned because the House will be aware that there is a phrase used sometimes in American politics that a particular party, interest or politician has been “economical with the truth”. I would not charge the Minister with that. I would, however, worry that if the legislation passes in its present form it lays the Parliament open to an accusation that we are parsimonious with democracy and a little niggardly with justice. I am particularly concerned because of the Title of the Bill. It is a Bill for the Prohibition of Incitement to Racial, Religious or National Hatred and it excludes certain areas. In view of the history of this legislation and of the debate that was held on the video situation in which an attempt was made in very much the same way to introduce a similar clause — a sexually orientated clause for example — into a section of the Bill that dealt with incitement to hatred, I supplied information about the widespread acceptance in the domestic law of a growing number of countries. In view of that, that section was entirely withdrawn and we then were very pleased to have this legislation in front of us. In view of the fact that this legislation now appears without any such clause, it seems to me that we are in danger of having a situation in which half a loaf is a great deal worse than no bread. I have no doubt whatever that certain dangerous interests inside this country will take this Bill as an open incitement to hatred. I speak with some feeling because I receive regularly, through the post, documentation which will not be covered by this legislation unless the Minister is prepared to consider the amendments I have put down in the same careful, balanced and judicious way as he has considered the amendments put down by other Senators during the afternoon.I have not had the opportunity to acquaint the Minister directly with all of this information but I would like to read for the information of the House and the Minister, a piece of literature recently received by me. The morning before I gave evidence to the Commission on Penal Reform, chaired by the late Sean MacBride, I was in the Hirschfeld centre when I noticed sparks through a plexiglas dome on the roof. I went onto the roof with fire fighting equipment of an electrical kind because I thought that some of the sophisticated monitoring equipment we put on the roof to protect it against fire and burglary had short circuited. When I got onto the roof I found that the whole flat roof, which was made of tarmacadam and asphalt, had been covered with a thin film of petrol, and there was a full sized drum of petrol and two churns full of explosives on the roof. The people initiating this incendiary attack had got down to the ground again and thrown up firelighters. The entire roof was beginning to blaze. The intention, quite clearly, was to ignite the roof, cause the two kegs to explode, blow the roof off and send the contents of the oil barrel down the building. Within 20 minutes from the moment at which I spotted this incident there would have been 200 people attending a discotheque. Two hundred people could have been literally incinerated to death.This material constitutes a clear and explicit incitement. It could not possibly be clearer. Item No. 5 on their agenda is “suspect discos, gay bars, clubs etc. to be burned down”. I am sure this is not the Minister's wish or intention in any way. I would not wish it to be thought for a second that I did feel that the Minister would want to be associated with or allow this kind of sentiment abroad. But it is perfectly clear that the absence of a specific clear provision on sexual orientation will render this legislation absolutely impotent in dealing with this material.
